Luke 16:19-31

Many disregard this passage of scripture as a true parable, but a simple examination of scripture tells us that Jesus never addressed the Pharisees, or the Sadducee's without talking to them in parables (Mark 4:11-12).

So from that aspect alone we know that Luke 16:19-31 is a parable.

There is also that language and visual pictures that Jesus presented that clearly describe that Jesus isn't painting a picture of hell and the afterlife, but the wresting away of the Kingdom of God from the Children of Israel for the failure of apostolic preaching to the nations (gentiles) that would preach beauty and coming of the Kingdom of God.

Verse 19 is describing the Jewish nation, specifically the typical dress of a Pharisee.

Verse 20 Is describing the poor in the word gentile nations that desired the word of God from the Jewish nation.

Verse 21 describes being fed with the "crumbs" from the rich man's table. Bread produces crumbs. Jesus said "I am that bread of life." This verse also describes the way in which the gentiles as the were commonly referred to, as dogs.

In Matthew 15 we can see clearly how this is played out when the Canaanite woman (a gentile) was seeking the Lord for His healing:

Matthew 15:26
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast [it] to dogs.
Matthew 15:27
And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table.

This exchange is even more telling and descriptive in Mark 7:27-28.

Verses 22 to 27 describes the separation of the gentiles brought about by the failure of the Children to properly proselytize the Kingdom of God to other nations. Abraham's bosom is a specific term that Jews would understand which was relating their selfish notion that they were saved simply because of blood and their connection to him.

Verse 28 is very interesting in that Jacob and Leah between them had 6 sons which would mean Judah, the children of whom Jesus was addressing, had five brothers.

Verse 29 is where Jesus simply tells these religious leaders that they failed to listen to Moses and the Prophets.

Verse 30 describes that they would be more apt to believe if one (Moses or one of the prophets) came back to them, thus causing there repentance.

Verse 31 simply describes the prediction that by refusing Moses and the Prophets, they would refuse the one who would rise from the dead - Jesus Christ.

Luke 16:19-31 is a parable but also is literal.

Then it can't be a parable. But maybe you might be able to let me know how it is literal?

What does "bread" represent in the Bible?

John 6:48
I am that bread of life.

What does bread produce? Crumbs?

Quote
Read Luke 23:43,

This would mean that the thief got to heaven before Jesus.

John 20:17
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and [to] my God, and your God.

Quote
read 1 Peter 3: 18

The same spirit that made Jesus alive from the dead is the same spirit that spoke to those before the flood.

Quote
and 1 Peter 4:5-6

Compare to:

Ephessians 2:1
And you [hath he quickened], who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Colossians 2:13
And you,
Quote
being dead in your sins
and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Quote
And a few more Scripture verses to read;
2 Corinthians 5:7-8

Compare to 1 Corithians 15:50-52.

Which comes first? 1 or 2?

Quote
1 Thessalonians 4: 13-18

1 Thessalonians 4:16
For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Rise, as in being in the grave, asleep, and being resurrected.

Compare:

John 6:44
No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Quote
1 Corinthians 15:35-55

Let's take Luke 23: 43 ; KJV " And JESUS said unto him, " Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with Me in paradise."

What do you believe, that the dead are now dead?

In a word, yes.

Compare:

Job 14:10
But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where [is] he?

Job 14:11
[As] the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

Job 14:12
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

Job 14:13   ¶
O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Job 14:14
If a man die, shall he live [again]? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

Job 14:15
Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

Quote
God is a God of the living, not the dead.

That correct. The dead know nothing.

Ecclesiastes 9:5
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

Ecclesiastes 9:6
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any [thing] that is done under the sun

Quote
What of the transfiguration?

The event where the prophet Elijah and Moses the lawgiver were quickened before Christ. Neither of which  died a 'normal' death. One was caught up in a whirlwind one was taken by God at death.
